Name: Blaise Lawson
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Race: Human
Height: 5'8"
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Job Class: Soldier
Town of Origin: Free City Maya
Starting Point: Geo
PB: Asaba Hideaki from Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Background:
Blaise was born in Maya to Leander and Julia Lawson, a married couple who ran a butcher shop. He also had an older brother named Kellan, who was two years older than he. They lived a largely normal and happy life, where the children would sometimes help their parents with the shop; the two brothers were very close growing up and though they did the same stupid things kids sometimes do, they stayed out of any real trouble. They both learned swordfighting and often sparred against each other, interspersed with friendly teasing. Their parents were proud to have sons that got along so well.
Unfortunately, when Blaise was eleven and Kellan was thirteen, tragedy struck. The two boys goofed off at home while their parents were working on an important order. They played at the top of their house's stairs and one thing led to another--Kellan lost his balance and fell down them, snapping his neck somewhere in the fall. Horrified, his brother tried to rouse him, but he had been killed.
And Blaise's life took a turn for the worse. The formerly ordinary boy turned into a delinquent who fought other children, destroyed people's property and stole from whoever he thought he could. After three years of his parents attempting to talk to him about what was bothering him (which he refused to do) and punishing him for his actions (which had absolutely no effect), he was caught by the local authorities, along with two friends, in the act of breaking into someone's house. All three were disciplined for this.
Afterwards, his parents tried to talk to him about it. He yelled at them about how he did not care anymore. This confirmed to them what they had feared all along--his brother's death had changed him. However, they could not help him, as his hostility towards them made it impossible. Instead, they decided that perhaps moving from their house might be good for him, as their home had been where Kellan had died and it could have been reminding him of what had happened. They wrote to Julia's brother and his wife, explaining what had happened to Blaise and asking if he could move in with them and at least see if he improved. The response back was positive and he was sent off to Geo via ship.
However, once he arrived and met his aunt and uncle, they were only willing to take him in on a condition: He had to attend school. Though he did not want to, he agreed anyway because he had nowhere else to go.
Blaise did indeed enroll and attend but he hated every last minute of it. In short order, he gained a reputation as one of the most troublesome students in school. He often cut classes and when he did actually show up, he did little and had absolutely no regard for his studies. Outside of school, he still got into fights. As a result of his poor results, his uncle and aunt enrolled him into the school's tutoring program, where he was assigned to a tutor--a boy a year younger than Blaise named Adrian. During his sessions, which he absolutely resented, he badmouthed his tutor and made his desire to leave quite clear; Adrian still treated him kindly, though.
It was this patience and tolerance that, after a few months, started to finally get through to Blaise. Even the day that he declared his intentions to drop out and find something else to do, Adrian still refused to give up on him, in spite of the older boy's confusion and objections; when he learned of what happened to Kellan, he encouraged Blaise to see it through, as his brother would not have wanted him to just give up in his name.
Though Blaise never promised he would see it through, eventually he realized that Adrian was right and fought to change himself around. His brother, he started to believe, would have been ashamed of him, but it was never too late to improve. It was a slow and difficult task, but after several months, his temper and resentment began to wane and he began to apply himself to his studies. After spending some time dabbling in several different fields to come to a conclusion about what he wanted to do (most notably, his attempt to learn magic was a spectacular failure; his former magic professor swears that Blaise is the worst spellcaster he has ever seen), he enrolled in a communications program.
After another two years, the difference was so remarkable that his aunt and uncle allowed him to move into a dormitory. It took some effort, but he eventually managed to get Adrian as his roommate in a two-room arrangement. He has since made it a goal to get Adrian out whenever possible. He also started dating. It seemed the troublemaker of the past had vanished.
Now, five years after entering Geo, Blaise has only become less and less like his former self. Now most people who remember him from his early days can barely even believe he is the same person. Fairly popular now, well-liked, talkative, a hard worker when he wishes to be....
...of course, he still thinks this magic book thing would be a great diversion during a boring lecture.
Personality:
Unlike the sullen smartmouthed boy from before, Blaise has grown into an upbeat, friendly and enthusiastic young man. So much so, in fact, that he is positively contagious--or irritating to spend time with. He tends to be very upfront about things and will rarely hesitate to speak his mind, though he is easygoing and does not press or get angry when people do not agree with him. He is open about who he is; he almost invites others to do the same and is disappointed when people do not wish to.
He is extremely talkative and loves to tell stories, to the point where just about all of his teachers have to tell him to be quiet at least once a week. This, coupled with the fact that he loves to joke around, ensures that he is often someone people enjoy listening to. His life revolves around having fun and helping the people around him do the same, and it shows.
Additional Information:
Blaise smokes every now and then. He also handles a sword fairly well.
